How to Change Your AC Filter (and How Often!)

At Rego Electric, Heating and Cooling, we’re always ready to help you with AC maintenance or repairs, including AC filter changes. However, this is a task you can easily handle yourself.

Changing your AC filter is essential, and it needs to be done more frequently than regular maintenance visits. Follow this step-by-step guide for effective filter replacement, or feel free to reach out to our professional air conditioning technicians for expert advice.

Step 1: Turn Off Your Air Conditioner

Before you start, ensure your AC is turned off and won’t accidentally switch on while you’re working. For added peace of mind, consider turning off the AC breaker or locating the power switch and completely shutting it off.

Step 2: Locate the AC Filter

To access the filter, look inside your furnace. Your furnace’s owner’s manual will guide you. The filter panel is usually labeled “Filter” or something similar. You might need a screwdriver to remove the panel and reveal the filter.

Step 3: Purchase the Right Filter

Note down the size of the previous filter, as it’s often printed on its side. This information can be helpful for future reference. If your furnace can accommodate a thicker filter with the same dimensions, consider upgrading for improved filtration, particularly for allergies and small particles like germs.

Step 4: Properly Install the New Filter

Most filters have an indicated direction of airflow. To ensure you position it correctly, keep the old filter in place until you’re ready to install the new one. Then, place the new filter exactly where the previous one was.

Step 5: Turn the AC Back On

Re-enable the AC by flipping the switch or turning on the breaker, or simply restart it using the thermostat. Your AC should function smoothly, and you’ll notice cleaner air than before. If the old filter was very dirty, you might even experience reduced energy consumption.

Know When to Change the AC Filter

Typically, we recommend changing the filter every 1-3 months, depending on various factors. Our technicians can provide a more accurate estimate after inspecting your air conditioner and discussing its usage with you. Even if you only use the AC occasionally, change the filter at least every 6 months.
